About the artist

Born and reared in the midwest, Sonja began painting in pastels 15 years ago, but for the last 8 has painted exclusively in oils. She is largely self-taught since her one and one half years as a fine art major at the University of Kansas and graduation from the University of Missouri. She received a post-graduate paralegal degree from Texas State University.

After her two daughters were grown and on their own, to continue her art education, she attended numerous workshops with renowned artists David Leffel, Sherrie McGraw, Rose Frantzen, Qiang Huang, Stephanie Birdsall and many, many others.

Sonja is inspired by the beauty of everyday life and often “sees” a painting in the faces on the street, at museums, or everyday places. Painting, for her, is a way to capture and express that beauty whether it is a person, beloved pet, or treasured object. To her the way light travels over and around objects in a still life, pet or human portrait is magical and she strives to create an emotional response from the viewer of her paintings.

Sonja especially enjoys pet portraits and commissions are accepted upon request.
